Panasonic Energy Story

Our Story

At Panasonic Energy, we set out each day to change the world by accelerating the transition to sustainable energy through the production of safe, high-quality lithium-ion batteries. With the heart of a start-up and over 30 years of experience producing cylindrical battery cells, Panasonic Energy is at the forefront of the EV-battery industry. Our leading technology, ceaseless commitment to quality and safety, and prioritization of our people make us a top battery supplier and employer of choice in the U.S. and around the world.

A Century of Innovation

Panasonic Energy’s roots begin in Japan, where Konosuke Matsushita founded Panasonic, and the new company invented a battery for bicycle lamps in 1923. Since then, we’ve been recognized as a global leader in batteries, with a 100-year history of innovation spanning both battery business operations and battery cell technology.

We supply advanced lithium-ion batteries to leading global automotive manufacturers and we are the top lithium-ion battery supplier in the global market for electric vehicles. Our advanced lithium-ion battery technology is designed to provide high energy density, lower costs, and improved driving range — all factors that reduce the vehicle’s environmental impact.

In 2014, we brought this innovation and expertise to the U.S., establishing Panasonic Energy of North America (PENA). In 2017, we began producing batteries for the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer at the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada.

Panasonic Energy’s operation in Sparks is now one of the largest lithium-ion battery factories in the world with a growing workforce of more than 4,000 employees. We have surpassed 11 billion cells delivered and counting. And this is just the beginning.

Commitment to Growth

In 2025, we’re excited to open a 4.7 million-square-foot facility in De Soto, Kansas. When the new facility is fully operational, we anticipate an annual production capacity of over 30 GWh. Our $4 billion investment will create up to 4,000 jobs in Kansas while establishing educational and professional development opportunities to help build a next-generation workforce. We’re putting Kansas at the center of revolutionizing the U.S. transportation industry and creating a better future for generations to come.

Driving a More Sustainable Future

As the demand for EVs rises, we’re continuing to advance our lithium-ion battery technology and production capabilities to achieve greater efficiency and performance in electric vehicles. We remain committed to scaling our U.S. business, building a future that is sustainable for our people, sustainable for our business, sustainable for our industry, and sustainable for our planet.
